The food service Tokutei Ginou 2 (SSW2) exam is held roughly every 45 days. We build a curriculum for you around that cycle, counting back from the next exam date.

Based on each provider’s public information as of July 2026. If you are on a paid ChatGPT plan, you can use Zairyuu from ChatGPT once it is set up. We compared how naturally each one explains material and answers questions, and settled on Claude as the standard. All you need to bring is your own phone.

What changes when you move up to SSW2

Once you hold Tokutei Ginou 2 (SSW2), the cap on your period of stay disappears. You can bring your family to Japan, and in time you can apply for permanent residence.

Tokutei Ginou 2 is defined field by field. The nursing care field has no SSW2; there the route is the Certified Care Worker (Kaigo Fukushishi) qualification instead.

The exam is out of 250 points, and you need 65% or more to pass. Of 4,176 people who sat it, 2,252 passed — about half did not.

Before you file for the status of residence

In food service you also need JLPT N3 or above on top of the skills exam. Finding study time between shifts is not easy.

Store management and similar duties

You need experience in a role supporting the store manager. Your workplace also has to issue documents proving that experience and job title.

The pass rate is calculated from the cumulative number of examinees and successful candidates in the food service field, as published by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan in "Operational Status of the Specified Skilled Worker System" (as of the end of December, Reiwa 7). There are no published past papers and no commercial practice books for the food service SSW2 exam, so in practice most people sit it with nothing to study from.
